Tottenham 2 - 1 Liverpool
Ryan Scott, November 1st 2008
Liverpool have not been without their fair share of good fortune over recent weeks, but lady luck certainly wasn’t smiling on them today, as the Reds went down to a late Spurs winner in a game they had dominated.
Liverpool, facing a difficult fixture at a cold and windy White Hart Lane, found the ascendancy early. They were on the front foot from the off, and found the lead through a fiercely hit drive from Dirk Kuyt after Robbie Keane did well to win the ball back in a dangerous position.
Tottenham almost gave themselves a mountain to climb minutes later, when Darren Bent almost turned a corner into his own net, fortunately for him though it hit the post and bounced away to safety.
Tottenham enjoyed the majority of possession through the remainder of the first half but failed to really test Pepe Reina in the Liverpool goal. The only time Spurs threatened was with a deliciously teasing ball into the penalty area by Vedran Corluka which no-one managed to get on the end of, and a volley from outside the area by Luka Modric.
For the start of the second half Harry Redknapp brought on two substitutes in the shape of Roman Pavlyuchenko and Aaron Lennon. Despite this attacking move from the Tottenham boss it was Liverpool who had the better of the chances.
Twice Steven Gerrard hit the crossbar, once with a deft chip and the other a shot which deflected off of Ledley King. Dirk Kuyt and Xabi Alonso also had good chances to double the lead, but neither could direct their shot goalwards.
The game should have been dead and buried with the amount of chances Liverpool had, and the Reds were made to pay for their poor showing in front of goal.
First, a David Bentley corner, with Ledley King pressuring Jamie Carragher, was headed into his own net by the Liverpool vice-captain.
What had previously been a relatively quiet game suddenly exploded into life, with Spurs sensing a winner on the cards and Liverpool desperate to regain the lead. In the play that followed either side could have grabbed a winner, but it was the home team that were to prove victorious.
Bentley picked up a throw in before running towards goal and hitting a drive at Reina. The Liverpool keeper parried the shot but only as far as Roman Pavlyuchenko, who was on hand to tap the ball in from a tight angle.
Liverpool immediately went on the offensive from the kick off following the goal, but with the game all but over there simply wasn’t enough time to turn things round, and the only unbeaten record in English football this season was gone. Whilst the Reds can feel hard done by not to at least get something out of the game there won’t be too much time to reflect on this result, as attention turns to Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Tuesday night.
