Right-back Steve Finnan signed for Liverpool from Fulham in the summer of 2003.
Known affectionately by the fans as ‘Mr Consistent’, Finnan is a player who whilst rarely producing moments of sublime skill barely puts a foot wrong in games.
He began his career with non-league Welling United before turning professional with Birmingham City in 1995. After only a handful of appearances he was on his way to Notts County, where his performances caught the attention of then Fulham boss Kevin Keegan, who swooped to sign him for £600,000 in November 1998.
Finnan got his first taste of Premiership football three years later, after helping the Cottagers gain promotion to the top flight. The step up was seemingly no problem for him, as the good performances continued and found him selected in the PFA Team of the Year for the 01/02 season.
Having made his international debut against Greece in April 2000, Finnan was an established regular for the Republic of Ireland, playing 50 times for his country and scoring twice.
His form for club & country convinced manager Gerard Houllier to sign him in the summer of 2003, and a £3.5m deal was soon tied up.
After an injury struck first season some fans were questioning the Irishman’s position at the club, with the signing of Josemi adding further competition for his place. Finnan responded in fine form though and retained his place in the team, culminating with an appearance in the famous Champions League final of 2005 against AC Milan, though he picked up an injury and was substituted at halftime.
In August 2007 Finnan was offered a new two year deal at the club, with the option of a one year extension.
In January 2008 Finnan announced his retirement from international football.
