Irish striker Robbie Keane signed for Liverpool from Tottenham Hotspur in July 2008, for a reported fee of £19m plus add ons.
A boyhood Liverpool fan, Keane rejected the chance to sign for his idols as a youngster, instead opting to ply his trade at a lower league club whilst he developed & opting for Wolverhampton Wanderers.
A successful spell with Wolves saw Coventry City offer £6m for his services in 1999, and after just one season Inter Milan snapped him up for £13m. Keane was brought in by manager Marcello Lippi though, who was soon to leave Inter himself, and the new management didn’t see him as part of the club’s plans.
A loan move to Leeds Utd was next on the cards, and after scoring 9 goals in 14 games Leeds manager David O’Leary was convinced to make the move permanent and paid £12m for Keane. His arrival at Leeds coincided with their well documented fall from grace though, and in 2002 the striker moved to Tottenham for a fee of £7m.
107 goals in 253 appearances for Spurs saw Keane become a fans favourite, and in 2008 Keane picked up the first major honour of his career after Spurs beat Chelsea in the Carling Cup Final.
It was this form in his final season with the North London side that convinced Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez to add Keane to his Anfield squad, and on July 28th the transfer was confirmed.
