Philipp Degen signed for Liverpool on a free transfer from German club Borussia Dortmund in July 2008.
The right back joined Swiss club FC Basel in 1996 aged 13, making his debut five years later.
After four seasons with Basel, during which time he claimed three league titles and one domestic cup, Degen was snapped up by Dortmund. He spent three years with the German club, the last of which was blighted by injury.
He managed to recover from injury in time to play for Switzerland in Euro 2008 but was lacking match fitness. By the time he was ready to play for the co-hosts they had been eliminated from the competition.
On signing Degen manager Rafa Benitez said: "Philipp is an offensive player with great energy and a winning mentality. His strength is going forward and I am confident he will prove to be a quality addition to our squad."
Full back Degen has a twin brother called David, who also plays professional football and plays for his brother’s former club Basel.
