Martin Skrtel arrived at Anfield in January 2008 for a fee of £6.5m, making him Liverpool’s most expensive defender.
With Daniel Agger picking up a season long injury and Sami Hyypia advancing in years, a centre back was manager Rafa Benitez’s priority when the transfer window opened, and he acted quickly to sign the Slovak international.
Skrtel began his career with FC Previdza after choosing football over his other sporting passion, hockey. He went on to enjoy a successful spell with FC Trencin before moving to the Russian Premier League with FC Zenit in 2004.
His performances during his time at Zenit resulted in interest from a host of European clubs including Valencia, Everton and
Spurs, but it was Liverpool who eventually signed the player and he made his debut as a second-half sub against Aston Villa on January 21st 2008.
