Just Get The Stadium Built Already!Stephen Fleetwood, September 12th 2008 Anfield. Church to millions of reds fans across the globe. When I think of Anfield, I imagine big european nights, black and white images of players from the past scoring goals in front of the kop. The Hillsborough memorial. The image of the pitch covered in flowers. Even long queue's at the ticket office. All vivid in my mind. Then comes along the new Anfield. Thrown at us like a whirlwind, fantastic pictures, promises of a new and better future. A stadium to rival any other stadium ultimately capable of accommodating up to 73,000 people. The future is bright, the future is Stanley Park. I'm excited, I cannot wait for the new stadium to be built. All the hype has got me giggling like a little kid. Yet here we are today, wondering whether it will ever be built. Delays, delays and yet more delays. Our custodians of the club blame the credit crunch, even though the pockets of these two fools are filled with enough dosh to finance the build. Come on yanks, dig deep and pay up for the new stadium. 18 months ago, we were promised work would be under way by now, but no, the blame game creeps out. The credit crunch, banks wont give us the money, we need to cut back on certain parts of the design to save money. What a load of bull. They have the money, but there not prepared to dig into their own pockets to help the club they bought, the club they fell in love in, all the history, past players and tragedies, a vast history which they have bought and promised to take back to the top. So here we are looking to the banks for money. Look at us now, laughing stock in the media, any little thing being said by our owners gets totally blown up by the media, making us, the fans wondering what the hell is going on. Just build us the stadium please, it ain't that hard, pay the money upfront, watch our match day revenue triple and earn back what you forked out. Simple. |
