A Difference In ClassJoey Burns, August 2nd 2008 The money we have knocking about in the game right now is mind blowing, especially with Chelsea upping the ante and other clubs trying to follow suit and compete on a level ground. Yet we do still have examples in the footalling world of how classy and righteous some individuals can be. In the Premier League right now, we have a spectrum which is absolutely mind boggling. We have the two best footballers in the league, by a country mile, both being targetted by clubs who are willing to throw the money of a third world country in order to gain their services. Real Madrid are offering surplus of £70m for Ronaldo's services next season. With more money per week than the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, gets in a year. And we have, supposedly I may add, Chelsea. Offering £50m for Torres and with similar wages. And this is where the contrast becomes apparent. Both players are phenomenal individuals. Ronaldo basically scored the majority of a football team's goals which then led them to two major trophies this season. And Torres. Without his and Steven Gerrard's goals this season, I dread to think where our top four finish would have come from. Both players. Being enticed with the riches that not even lottery winners can dream of. For playing a game that most of us go out and enjoy in the park of a weekend, or in Warrington on a Monday night. In the case of Torres. Here's a quote from a Guillem Balague interview. Fernando Torres: I want to say very clearly that I'm not on the market and it is my desire to continue at Liverpool. I'm very happy at Liverpool and I want to carry on. Very good then. Swiftly moving on. In the case of Ronaldo. Real Madrid come knocking, and he blatantly disregards the manager and team that made him Player of the Year. "I would like to play for Real Madrid, but only if it is true they are ready to pay what Manchester United ask of them. However, it does not depend on me." "I really like playing in a white football kit, the white national kit that is." Oh aye yeah! And the difference is apparent with the clubs above the two players. Rick Parry has come out and said a categorical 'No', which is weird as he's usually a bit slower than that! (see the two Steven Gerrard to Chelsea saga's) On the other hand, we have Ferguson, who's really getting pissed off with Ronaldo's antics and flirtation with Madrid. Even handing in an official complaint to FIFA (thus deeming himself exempt from these tapping up rules. I hope FIFA throw it back at him and tell him to get used to his own medicine! ) After all this caper is over, I hope Ronaldo goes. Just so I can watch the matches he plays in and actually say he's a decent player without melting! And Torres? I hope he stays put! But I think you all knew that anyway! <.-- Begin Freedback Form --> <.-- DO NOT EDIT YOUR FORM HERE, PLEASE LOG IN AND EDIT AT FREEDBACK.COM --> |
