A Blessing In Disguise?Ed Colenutt, October 8th 2008 Well Martin Skrtel has finally proved he isn't invincible after all. The injury looked a bad one when he first did it, and now that it's been confirmed he's damaged his cruciate it looks like he'll be out for a long time. What this does mean though is a return to action for Daniel Agger. The Danish defender himself has seen his fair share of injury problems over the past 12 months, but now seems to be back to full fitness. Obviously it's never good for any player to get injured, but if you had to pick one I'd imagine Skrtel would've been high up everyone's list, due to the fact that we have such an excellent backup. I would actually go as far to say that Agger will not only make an apt replacement, but a better replacement. I don't want to take anything away from Skrtel, he's an excellent defender, but his game is more about blood and guts, very similar to Jamie Carragher. With Agger we have a defender who is comfortable in possession and not always looking to get rid of the ball asap, something Carra & Skrtel are both prone to doing. We have looked very solid defensively so far this season, but with Dossena taking time to settle in & Degen being injured most of the time since arriving we have looked short of ideas when it comes to attacking from the back. Hopefully the return of Agger, whilst we all wish it had come under different circumstances, will prove to be a blessing in disguise. |
